The Tolerant Church Revealed
In this message, we explore Jesus’ words to the church in Pergamum from Revelation 2:12-17, a church commended for remaining true to Christ even while living in a city filled with pagan worship and intense opposition. Despite facing persecution and even martyrdom, the believers in Pergamum held fast to their faith. However, Jesus also confronts them for their tolerance of false teaching within their community—specifically, teachings that encouraged compromise with the surrounding culture’s immorality and idolatry. We reflect on how being “nice” or avoiding conflict can sometimes lead to dangerous compromises, especially when it comes to essential truths of the gospel.
In this message we consider the difference between Christlike love and mere niceness, and the importance of standing firm in truth even when it’s unpopular or uncomfortable. We’re challenged to examine our own lives and churches: Are we upholding the truth of God’s Word, or are we letting false ideas take root for the sake of peace? Jesus calls us to repent of misplaced tolerance and promises a greater reward for those who overcome—true spiritual nourishment and a place at His eternal feast.
