Malachi – Covenantal Unfaithfulness

Speaker:
Passage: Malachi 1
Service Type:

In this sermon on the book of Malachi, we explore the theme of God’s covenantal faithfulness contrasted with the unfaithfulness of His people. The sermon begins with an engaging story about the importance of understanding and adhering to agreements, drawing a parallel to how we often overlook the “terms and conditions” of our relationship with God. Malachi’s message is a call to return to the covenant, highlighting the failures of both priests and people in maintaining their commitments to God.

The priests are criticised for offering defiled sacrifices, demonstrating a lack of reverence and obedience. The people, too, are called out for their injustices, unfaithfulness in marriage, and neglect of tithes. The sermon emphasises the seriousness of these sins and the need for genuine repentance and faithfulness.

Despite the widespread unfaithfulness, Malachi speaks of a faithful remnant who remain true to God. The sermon concludes with a hopeful message about the coming of John the Baptist, who prepares the way for Jesus, the Messiah. This sets the stage for the New Testament, reminding us that God is not done with His people and that through Jesus, there is a promise of restoration and a spiritual kingdom.
